Mongolia: Vast landscapes and nomadic life

Mongolia spans strikingly varied landscapes: central steppes, Gobi dunes, the Altai Mountains, forests and lakes in the north. Beyond Ulaanbaatar, tracks cross vast open spaces where herds, yurts and small villages mark the journey.

Travelers also come to Mongolia to meet nomadic families and experience a way of life still closely tied to animals and the seasons. On foot, horseback, by vehicle or dog sledding in winter, each region offers a unique perspective of the country.

When to go

Best times to visit

From May to June, the steppes turn green again and travelers are still few. July and August offer the mildest temperatures, but also attract more visitors. September and October are ideal for autumn landscapes. From December to April, Mongolia reveals itself under snow and ice, with very low temperatures.

Before you go

Good to know

Distances are long and, outside the cities, much of the travel is off-road. Comfort may be basic in remote areas and phone coverage is irregular. Temperature swings are significant: come equipped for the region and season.
