After the reunification of Vietnam in 1977, many Vietnamese left the country to escape poverty and discrimination. In the fishing village of An Bang, near the former imperial capital of Hue, the cemetery, nicknamed the 'City of Ghosts,' was built thanks to donations sent from abroad. The 'boat people' funded the construction of these immense, richly decorated sepulchres, valued between 300 million and three billion Vietnamese dong, to honor their ancestors.
